STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

BUSINESS
Alphabet to invest $75 billion in capital expenditures in 2025

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, plans to invest around $75 billion in capital expenditures in 2025, a significant increase from $32.3 billion in 2023. While the company didn’t specify exactly how much will go toward AI, it’s likely a substantial portion given the industry-wide focus on building infrastructure to support AI advancements.

This surge in spending follows a strong financial performance, with Alphabet’s Q4 2024 revenues up 12% to $96.5 billion. Google Cloud, in particular, saw a 10% growth to $12 billion, driven by expansion in AI infrastructure and generative AI solutions.

CEO Sundar Pichai also highlighted exciting developments, including Gemini 2.0, Project Mariner, and a new mixed-reality OS, teasing further innovations for 2025, particularly in native advertising and Search experiences.

BUSINESS
GM lays off half of Cruise after killing robotaxi business

Cruise, the autonomous vehicle company, is laying off around half of its workforce, including CEO Marc Whitten and other top executives. This major restructuring is part of parent company GM's decision to scale back its operations, ultimately leading to a shutdown. Over 1,000 employees are affected, including Chief Safety Officer Steve Kenner and global head of public policy Rob Grant.

Despite these cuts, some employees and resources will be reassigned to GM’s Super Cruise team, which focuses on driver assistance. Cruise’s layoffs follow GM's earlier announcement to abandon robotaxi development, though the company still plans to pursue autonomous vehicles for personal use in the future.

Cruise has faced challenges, including a pedestrian accident involving one of its robotaxis and scrutiny over buggy algorithms. These issues led to operational halts and a $1.5 million fine for GM.

Apple Invites app is now available to iPhone and iCloud users

Apple has unveiled Apple Invites, a sleek event-planning app for iPhone that lets iCloud+ subscribers create and share event invitations. Guests can RSVP without needing an Apple device or iCloud account, and the app is also accessible on the web.

Hosts can manage RSVPs, customize invites with photos or AI-generated images, and add event details like location and background themes. Apple Maps and Weather integration provides forecasts and directions, while Apple Music subscribers can create collaborative playlists for guests. A Shared Album feature allows attendees to upload event photos and videos.

Exclusive to iCloud+ users (starting at $0.99/month), Apple Invites requires iOS 18+ and was quietly spotted on iCloud’s website before its official launch. It streamlines event planning with Apple’s signature polished experience.

TECH SPECIAL
Grubhub user data compromised in major security breach

Grubhub confirmed a security breach involving user, driver, and merchant data, including hashed passwords and partial credit card details. The breach was traced to unusual activity from an account used by a third-party service provider for customer support.

The compromised data includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, and partial credit card information (last four digits), along with hashed passwords for some legacy systems. Affected users include customers, drivers, merchants, and campus dining service students.

Grubhub terminated the compromised account and removed the service provider from its systems. While the company hasn’t disclosed the exact timing or number of affected accounts, it has rotated any potentially impacted passwords and confirmed that no full payment card details or bank account information were accessed.
