Tim Cook teases an 'Apple launch' next Wednesday

Apple CEO Tim Cook teased an upcoming launch set for Wednesday, February 19, with a cryptic social media post: “Get ready to meet the newest member of the family.” The post, tagged #AppleLaunch, features an animated Apple logo inside a circle but reveals no specifics.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman speculates this could mean a new iPhone SE, rumored to feature an A18 chip, 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, USB-C, and Apple Intelligence support. Other expected Apple releases include a MacBook Air, iPad Air, entry-level iPad, and possibly an AirTag refresh or smart home hub later this year.
With no official event announced, Apple may unveil products through press releases and YouTube videos, as they did with M4-powered Macs last October. All eyes are now on February 19 to see what Apple has in store.

Bezos's Blue Origin rocket firm to cut 10% of workforce

Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ space venture and a key SpaceX rival, is laying off 10% of its workforce—about 1,400 employees—to cut bureaucracy and refocus priorities, CEO Dave Limp told staff. The layoffs primarily impact program management, R&D, and engineering as the company streamlines operations ahead of its 2025 commercial moon missions.
Despite the cuts, Blue Origin has seen recent successes. In January, it launched its New Glenn orbital rocket and retrieved the second stage—a feat that took SpaceX’s Falcon 9 years to perfect. The company also revived its space tourism business in late 2024, sending six paying customers to space.
Still, Blue Origin lags behind SpaceX, which launches rockets more frequently. While these layoffs won’t close the gap, they align with Bezos’ long-term push for financial efficiency, as noted by Ars Technica.

Major publishers sue Cohere over copyright infringement

Major publishers, including Politico, Vox, The Atlantic, and The Guardian, are suing AI startup Cohere for copyright and trademark infringement, accusing it of improperly using over 4,000 copyrighted works to train its language model. The lawsuit claims Cohere passed off entire articles without proper attribution, calling it theft.
The News Media Alliance, which organized the lawsuit, argues that instead of creating their own content, Cohere is stealing from publishers to compete without compensation, harming their business. The suit also accuses the company of trademark infringement, with AI-generated articles containing incorrect information but using publishers’ names.
The publishers seek up to $150,000 in damages per work infringed and aim to limit Cohere’s access to copyrighted materials, hoping to set legal guidelines for AI’s use of journalism.

Baidu is making its AI assistant ERNIE Bot free to use

Baidu is making its AI chatbot, ERNIE Bot, free to use starting April 1, citing reduced costs and tech improvements. The company will also issue refunds to some users who paid for the service. ERNIE Bot will be available on both desktop and mobile platforms.
In addition, Baidu plans to roll out an advanced search function on the same day, which will also be available for free. This feature is expected to include enhanced reasoning capabilities. This move follows the introduction of premium features in late 2023, which cost around $8 per month and were powered by ERNIE 4.0.
Despite being an early mover in China’s AI chatbot space, ERNIE has struggled to gain widespread adoption. Competitors like ByteDance’s Doubao and upstart DeepSeek, which offers its AI assistant for free, have seen stronger user growth, according to third-party data.
