STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

OpenAI now lets you call ChatGPT on your phone

On the 10th day of “ship-mas,” OpenAI launched a new feature allowing users to call ChatGPT for up to 15 minutes for free via 1-800-CHATGPT. This service is available in the US, with global messaging through WhatsApp at 1-800-242-8478. The 15-minute limit is per phone number each month, so users can create additional numbers to extend their time.

The phone service uses OpenAI’s Realtime API, while the WhatsApp integration is powered by GPT-4 mini. OpenAI sees this as an accessible way for newcomers to experience AI through familiar platforms, offering a simplified version of ChatGPT compared to the web app.

This move echoes Google’s 2007 launch of GOOG-411, a free directory assistance service that was discontinued in 2010, possibly after achieving its goal of collecting voice data to improve speech recognition technology.

US Supreme Court to hear TikTok challenge to ban

The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear ByteDance’s appeal against a law that could ban TikTok. The court moved quickly, scheduling oral arguments for January 10, just two days after the appeal was filed. The law, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, is set to take effect on January 19, one day before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.

The bill mandates TikTok’s ban unless ByteDance sells the app to an American company. It was passed with strong bipartisan support and signed by President Biden in April, citing national security concerns over potential Chinese government influence and data collection.

ByteDance argues the law violates free speech, a stance supported by the ACLU. While Trump attempted to ban TikTok during his presidency, he has since softened his position ahead of the 2024 election.

Deutsche Bank builds L2 blockchain on Ethereum

Deutsche Bank is developing a layer-2 (L2) blockchain on Ethereum using ZKsync technology to tackle compliance issues with public blockchains in regulated finance. The L2 solution, part of Project Dama 2, aims to enhance transaction efficiency while ensuring regulatory safeguards, integrating directly with Ethereum, according to Bloomberg.

Project Dama 2 is linked to Singapore’s Project Guardian, which explores blockchain-based asset tokenization with 24 financial institutions. Deutsche Bank’s L2 platform will include trusted validators and offer regulators oversight to reduce risks like interacting with sanctioned entities, aligning blockchain transparency with financial compliance.

If successful, Deutsche Bank’s initiative could encourage other financial institutions to adopt blockchain technology while addressing regulatory challenges. The bank plans to launch the platform in 2025, pending regulatory approval.

19% of US voters traded or used crypto, says new poll

A new Emerson College poll reveals that 19% of US voters have invested in, traded, or used crypto at some point. The poll, conducted between Dec. 11-13 with 1,000 registered voters, also found that nearly 40% of crypto users had made purchases with it.

The data highlights a younger, more diverse crypto user base, with 57% of users holding a favorable view of Donald Trump. The survey also showed that crypto use is most common among voters under 40, with 30% of them having used it, and the percentage drops significantly with age.

Men are twice as likely to use crypto as women, and a third of crypto users are from minority groups, including Asian, Hispanic, or Black. The survey also found that support for a TikTok ban was strong among older voters, but less so among those under 29.
