STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Chinese AI lab DeepSeek rattles Silicon Valley

DeepSeek’s AI model R1 has shaken the industry, standing shoulder to shoulder with top US platforms like OpenAI's o1 and Meta's Llama. In an interview with CNBC, Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang revealed that R1 outperformed or matched leading models in his firm’s toughest test, “Humanity’s Last Exam,” which challenges AI with questions from professors in math, physics, and other fields.

Wang highlighted that DeepSeek’s breakthrough marks a significant shift in the US-China AI race. He pointed out that the model’s Christmas Day release was a symbolic move, signaling that Chinese labs are closing the gap with US AI giants.

Despite US export restrictions on NVIDIA’s latest GPUs, Wang noted that DeepSeek has access to tens of thousands of GPUs, enabling it to push boundaries and challenge the global AI hierarchy.

Hubble snaps stunning image of the Tarantula Nebula

The Hubble Space Telescope, still going strong after over 30 years, recently captured a stunning image of the Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This vibrant star-forming region, the largest in the local universe, boasts stars up to 200 times the mass of the Sun at its core. Hubble’s view highlights the nebula’s colorful gas and star-studded outskirts.

Initially grayscale, Hubble’s images are transformed through a process that assigns colors to different wavelengths captured by the telescope’s filters. This technique brings ultraviolet, infrared, and visible light into vivid composite images.

The Tarantula Nebula’s radiant display is a testament to Hubble’s enduring legacy, offering a glimpse into the universe’s creativity and the intricate processes shaping galaxies nearby.

Meta announces initial test of ads on Threads

Threads, Meta’s ad-free app for over a year, is set to introduce advertising as part of a small test. Ads will appear as image posts in users’ feeds, starting with a limited group in the US and Japan, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri. Meta aims to ensure these ads feel relevant and blend seamlessly with organic content.

Initially, a few brands will participate, using Meta’s existing ad infrastructure to extend campaigns to Threads without additional resources. The platform will also test its "inventory filter," allowing advertisers to manage the sensitivity of content near their ads—a crucial feature as Meta adjusts its content moderation policies.

While the test is small, Meta’s scalable tools could quickly expand ads to Threads’ 300 million users, marking a key step in monetizing the app while maintaining user engagement.
