STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Elon Musk-led-team submits $97.4B bid for OpenAI

Elon Musk and a group of investors have made a $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI’s nonprofit arm, The Wall Street Journal reports. The offer, submitted Monday, is backed by Musk’s AI startup xAI, Valor Equity Partners, Hollywood mogul Ari Emanuel, and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC.

The bid comes as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman juggles major deals, including a $40 billion fundraising effort and a $500 billion AI infrastructure project. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI who left in 2019, has repeatedly accused the company of abandoning its original mission of open, safety-focused AI—a claim he is currently suing OpenAI over.

Musk’s team vows to outbid any competing offers, complicating OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit model. In response to the news, Altman quipped on X: “no thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”

Discord's new feature lets you take a break from people

Discord’s new "Ignore" feature offers users a discreet way to avoid unwanted interactions without the confrontational nature of blocking. When activated, Ignore mutes notifications and hides a user’s profile and messages, reducing their presence across Discord, while allowing them to still message you without your knowledge unless you choose to view them.

To use it, simply go to a user’s profile, tap the triple-dot menu, and select Ignore. Unlike blocking, Ignore allows the other person to see your profile and send messages, but they won’t be aware they’ve been muted.

Discord introduced this feature as part of its safety “toolbox,” providing a subtler option for users, especially teens, to manage online interactions. The platform is also joining other tech giants in launching ROOST, a non-profit to fight child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

France unveils €109 billion AI investment plan

France is diving into the AI revolution with a major €109 billion investment in its AI ecosystem, announced by President Macron on Sunday. This bold move comes just before Paris hosts the AI Action Summit, signaling Europe’s commitment to accelerating AI development. Macron likened France's investment to the U.S.'s $500 billion Stargate project, adjusted for population size.

In addition, France is set to leverage its abundant nuclear power, with a pledge of one gigawatt for a cutting-edge AI computing initiative. This project, led by FluidStack, aims to link AI chips with nuclear energy by 2026. With 57 reactors already in operation, France is well-positioned to power the AI boom.

FluidStack plans to begin construction in late 2024, targeting 250 megawatts of power for AI chips, mainly from Nvidia, with potential to expand to 10 gigawatts by 2030.
