Meta deletes AI profiles from Facebook and Instagram
Meta is shutting down AI-powered Instagram and Facebook profiles it introduced in 2023, following viral conversations about the characters' creators. These profiles, like "Liv," a "proud Black queer momma," and "Carter," a relationship coach, sparked controversy when users learned that Liv's development team lacked Black members, despite her identity.
Originally launched in September 2023, Meta removed most of the profiles by summer 2024, but a few lingered, drawing attention after a Meta executive revealed plans for more AI profiles. Conversations quickly went awry as users probed the bots about their creators, leading to the profiles’ rapid removal.
Meta acknowledged the controversy, citing a bug that prevented users from blocking the accounts. These AI personas were part of an experimental 2023 initiative, now ended to address the issues.

United Airlines to bring Elon Musk's Starlink on flights
United Airlines will begin testing SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet on flights in February 2025, with plans to roll it out across its fleet. This follows a partnership announced in September 2024 to improve inflight connectivity. The first commercial Starlink flight is expected in spring 2025 on an Embraer E-175.
Starlink will be free for MileagePlus members, enhancing Wi-Fi quality and potentially leading to new partnerships. United is also exploring deals with streaming services for more free content. The first mainline Starlink-enabled plane is expected by year’s end.
United joins Delta and Hawaiian Airlines in adopting Starlink, following SpaceX’s goal of 350 Mbps speeds. Starlink’s growth includes tests of its direct-to-cell service and new satellite-based texting in New Zealand.

Microsoft plans $80B investment in AI-enabled data centers
Microsoft is investing $80 billion in AI-enabled data centers by 2025, with over half of the funds directed to the U.S. These centers will train AI models and power cloud applications. The company stresses that AI's progress depends on large-scale infrastructure investments and calls on the incoming Trump administration to boost support, especially for research funding at the National Science Foundation and U.S. universities.
Acknowledging AI’s potential to disrupt the economy and displace jobs, Microsoft believes it will create new opportunities if Americans are trained to use AI as a tool, like smartphones and laptops.
A key priority is promoting American AI exports, as the U.S. faces a competitive race with China to lead global AI technology. Microsoft urges a strategic approach to ensure the U.S. remains the fastest mover.
