STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

DeepSeek shatters beliefs about the cost of AI

US stocks took a major hit on Monday, with over $1 trillion in market value wiped out as traders abandoned the tech sector amid panic over a new AI app from a Chinese startup. The S&P 500 dropped nearly 1.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite tumbled more than 3%.

The hardest-hit stocks were those of major chipmakers, particularly Nvidia, which plummeted almost 17%, erasing $589 billion in market cap and marking the largest one-day loss in history. This sent Nvidia from the top spot as the world’s most valuable company, with Apple rising 3% to claim the title.

Other chipmakers like Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor also saw significant losses, while the new AI app, DeepSeek, sparked turmoil. The app, said to outperform OpenAI’s ChatGPT, quickly became the top download on the US App Store, fueling the sell-off.

Trump says Microsoft is in talks to acquire TikTok

President Donald Trump revealed that Microsoft had shown interest in acquiring TikTok to prevent a ban on national security grounds. “I like bidding wars because you make your best deals,” Trump remarked while traveling on Air Force One, highlighting widespread interest in the platform.

TikTok faced a temporary US shutdown on January 18, complying with a law requiring its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest ownership or risk a ban. Trump delayed enforcing the law, seeking alternative solutions during his administration. However, his initial push to ban TikTok shifted during his 2024 campaign, where he promised to "save" the platform.

The ban gained momentum under President Joe Biden, who signed legislation addressing bipartisan concerns over data security and misinformation risks. Earlier this month, the US Supreme Court unanimously upheld the ban, rejecting free speech challenges.

DeepSeek limits new sign-ups following malicious attacks

After climbing to the top of Apple’s App Store charts in the US, DeepSeek’s AI Assistant is temporarily limiting new user sign-ups due to “large-scale malicious attacks.” Details on how these restrictions are being applied remain unclear, but existing users can still log in as usual.

An alert on the sign-up page states that registration may be “busy” rather than fully restricted, encouraging users to try again later. DeepSeek resolved earlier outages that prevented logins and new account creation but hasn’t provided details on the attacks.

Initially, sign-ups required a mainland China mobile number to “ensure continued service,” but this restriction has since been lifted. DeepSeek’s rise in popularity puts it in competition with Western AI services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.
