STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

BUSINESS
HTC to sell part of XR business to Google for $250 million

Google is investing $250 million in a deal with HTC to accelerate its Android XR ambitions. As part of the agreement, key members of HTC’s Vive engineering team, renowned for their VR expertise, will join Google. This move builds on HTC’s legacy of innovation, from the Vive VR headset launched in 2016 to the standalone Vive XR Elite.

The deal also grants Google a non-exclusive license to HTC's extended reality (XR) technologies, while HTC retains rights to its intellectual property and plans to continue developing XR headsets. Both companies will explore future collaborations, with Google aiming to unify the Android XR ecosystem, spanning virtual and mixed reality devices, including Project Moohan, a collaboration with Samsung.

Subject to closing conditions, the agreement is expected to finalize this quarter, marking a significant step for Google’s XR ecosystem expansion.

TECH
Threads rolls out post scheduling to app users

Threads has rolled out post scheduling for all users, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced. To schedule, create a post, tap the three-dot menu, and choose “Schedule.” Posts can be set up to 75 days in advance and managed from the drafts folder, though replies cannot be scheduled.

Another new feature allows users to “markup” reshared posts by drawing, highlighting, or adding arrows. This tool is gradually rolling out to select countries, with more regions to follow.

In addition, Threads is undergoing major updates, including replacing fact-checking with Community Notes as part of Meta’s moderation shift. Political content will also begin appearing in recommendations, signaling Threads’ evolving role as an X competitor.

OpenAI launches ‘Operator’ in research preview

OpenAI's autonomous agent, Operator, is here, capable of tackling complex, multi-step tasks. From calculating refunds and managing sales data to buying groceries and combining PDFs, Operator goes far beyond basic interactions, showcasing practical, hands-on utility.

This launch aligns with OpenAI’s 2025 vision for agentic AI. Alongside Tasks for ChatGPT, which automates daily actions like news briefs or reminders, Operator takes automation further with GPT-4o’s vision mode and GUI tools, enabling it to "see" and operate directly on a user’s screen.

Currently available in the U.S. for $200/month via ChatGPT Pro, Operator prioritizes safety by blocking harmful tasks and restricting access to blacklisted sites. OpenAI plans to expand availability to more subscription tiers in the future.

ROLI unveils the future of the piano at NAMM

Roli has unveiled its latest innovation, the Roli Piano, at the NAAM audio show in Anaheim. Building on previous models like the Airwave and Piano M, the new Piano doubles the key count to 49 and integrates MIDI keys that sync with an instructional app for seamless learning on phones or tablets.

Priced at $599—more than double the Piano M’s $249—the Roli Piano is being offered at an early bird price of $399 for a limited time. The Airwave’s signature hand-tracking gestures remain part of the mix, adding a dynamic layer of creativity.

In a modern twist, the Piano debuts the Piano AI Assistant, Roli’s first foray into generative AI for music education. The Assistant simplifies learning by blending intuitive guidance with music theory, promising a fun and engaging experience for players.
