STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TikTok users flock to Chinese app RedNote before US ban

RedNote, the Chinese social media app also known as Xiaohongshu, surged to the top of the Apple App Store as a potential US ban on TikTok looms. The app, which blends photos, short-form videos, and text posts, offers users feeds for "follow," "explore," and "nearby" content.

As users flock to RedNote, many American TikTok refugees are expressing concerns over the ban, with some even asking Chinese users about local memes. A quick look at RedNote’s Explore page reveals a mix of English-language posts alongside Chinese content, as users search for new communities.

Launched in 2013 as a shopping app, RedNote now boasts over 300 million monthly active users and exceeded $1 billion in profits last year. With the US Supreme Court set to rule on TikTok’s fate by January 19, the future of other Chinese-owned apps, including RedNote, WeChat, and ByteDance’s Lemon8 and CapCut, remains uncertain.

Samsung announces more flexible trade-in program

Samsung has revamped its Galaxy Trade-In program, allowing users to trade in select Galaxy smartphones year-round without requiring a new purchase. Launching in South Korea and France today, with broader availability in 2025, the program aims to enhance the long-term value of Galaxy devices by offering significant savings.

The update eliminates the need for a simultaneous purchase, previously required during checkout on Samsung’s site or app. Additionally, trade-ins are now available year-round, addressing a past limitation in South Korea where they were restricted to specific windows, typically around major product launches.

Currently, the program accepts flagship models, including the Galaxy S20 to S23 series and Z Flip 3 to Z Flip 5 foldables. However, it excludes newer devices like the Galaxy S24 and Z Flip/Fold 6, limiting the scope to slightly older models.

Meta starts testing 'Community Notes' on Threads

Meta is testing "Community Notes," a crowdsourced fact-checking feature, on Threads, replacing its professional fact-checking program. Developer Alessandro Paluzzi leaked screenshots showing an option to anonymously write notes on posts, similar to X’s (formerly Twitter) Community Notes.

Users can rate notes as helpful, determining their visibility under posts. This marks Threads' evolving moderation strategy and a shift in its stance on political content. Once avoiding political posts, Threads now suggests them and offers three exposure settings: “See less,” “Standard,” and “See more.”

Instagram and Threads head Adam Mosseri demonstrated these customization options in a Threads video, highlighting user control over content. These updates reflect Meta’s push to balance engagement with moderation.
