STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TikTok is back online after Trump pledged to restore it

TikTok announced Sunday that it had restored service to U.S. users after a brief suspension the evening before. The platform attributed its return to assurances provided by President-elect Donald Trump, who intervened to keep the app operational.

Hours earlier, Trump posted on Truth Social, emphasizing TikTok’s role in broadcasting his upcoming inauguration. He pledged to issue an executive order delaying the ban and ensuring no penalties for companies that kept TikTok accessible during negotiations. The order aims to address national security concerns while maintaining the platform's availability.

By Sunday afternoon, TikTok’s services began gradually resuming, starting with web access and later extending to the app. Welcoming users back, TikTok credited Trump’s efforts and encouraged creators to continue sharing and exploring content. The law allows a 90-day extension for the ban if specific conditions are met.

Amazon pauses US drone deliveries following crashes

Amazon has paused drone deliveries in Texas and Arizona after two MK30 drones crashed during testing in Oregon last December, with one catching fire. The crashes, caused by a software issue linked to light rain, highlight challenges with the next-gen MK30, which boasts a lighter build and longer range than its predecessor.

Despite the crashes, Amazon claims they aren’t the main reason for the halt. Spokesperson Sam Stephenson said the pause is voluntary while software updates are underway, and operations will only resume after FAA approval. Employees at affected sites will remain on payroll during this period.

Testing mishaps aren’t new—two MK30 drones collided earlier in 2023. Since launching drone deliveries in Texas in 2022, Amazon expanded to Phoenix in 2024, though California operations were suspended the same year.

Microsoft debuts AI-powered search for Windows 11

Microsoft is testing AI-powered search in Windows 11, offering a smarter way to find local files. Using semantic indexing, the feature enables casual language searches across Settings, File Explorer, and the taskbar. Unlike traditional methods, it works offline on Copilot Plus PCs equipped with NPU chips.

Currently, the AI search supports settings and image or text file formats like JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS. Users can choose indexed locations via Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows or enable “Enhanced” mode to include the entire system. Microsoft plans to extend the feature to cloud files, including OneDrive.

The rollout is gradual, starting with Snapdragon-powered Copilot Plus PCs and expanding later to Intel and AMD variants. Supported languages include Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
