STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TikTok to shut down in US unless Supreme Court intervenes

The Supreme Court takes on a landmark case today, balancing free speech and national security in deciding TikTok’s fate. The platform, used by half of Americans, faces a January 19 shutdown unless the Court blocks a law requiring its sale by Chinese parent ByteDance. TikTok warns the shutdown would silence over 170 million U.S. users on the brink of a presidential inauguration.

President-elect Donald Trump has urged the Court to delay action, seeking time for a political resolution—a rare move that could sway the justices. The decision must come swiftly, with the law’s enforcement looming just days away.

TikTok, ByteDance, and content creators argue the law violates free speech, impacting millions. Creators fear losing livelihoods, anxiously awaiting a ruling that could reshape the digital landscape.

Samsung Galaxy S25 to be announced on January 22

Samsung made a splash at CES 2025 with new laptops and TVs, but its biggest news is reserved for the first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year. Scheduled for January 22, 2025, at 1 PM ET in San Jose, the event is expected to showcase the latest in Galaxy AI and new devices powered by it.

Ahead of the official announcements, Samsung is offering a $50 discount and a chance to win a $5,000 gift card when you reserve the new gear. You can also score up to $900 in trade-in credit for your old device.

While the Galaxy S25 series, likely featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, is a given, Samsung may surprise us with non-smartphone devices. Rumors suggest the Galaxy Ring 2 and a potential Android XR headset, codenamed "Project Moohan," could make their debut.

VLC teases AI-generated subtitles and translation

At CES 2025, VLC demonstrated a groundbreaking feature: AI-generated subtitles and translations, powered locally and offline in real time. VideoLAN president Jean-Baptiste Kempf showcased the new technology, which uses open-source AI models to generate subtitles in multiple languages, with over 100 languages planned for future support.

The key advantage of this feature is that it operates entirely offline, without relying on cloud services. It runs directly within the VLC executable, ensuring privacy and seamless performance. AI-driven translations will also be available, allowing users to read subtitles in their preferred language.

This feature marks a major advancement over the previous OpenAI-powered plug-in. While no release date has been confirmed, the demo signals exciting future possibilities for VLC, which recently celebrated surpassing 6 billion downloads.

Elon Musk's xAI launches standalone Grok app

Gabby Jones/Bloomberg

Grok, the AI assistant integrated into X, is now available as a standalone app. Like its social media counterpart, the Grok app generates images, summarizes text, and answers questions in a conversational, humor-infused style developed by xAI. Initially tested in December 2024, the app launched alongside a free Grok tier, previously accessible only through an $8/month X Premium subscription.

Free users face limits of 10 requests every two hours and three image analyses daily. The app works without sign-in but offers login options via Apple, Google, X, or email. It’s unclear if X Premium perks extend to the standalone app.

While Grok shares accuracy challenges with other AI tools, it distinguishes itself by tackling “spicy questions” and its partially open-source model, offering a unique edge in the competitive AI assistant space.
