North Korea stole over $659M in crypto heists during 2024

In 2024, North Korean hackers stole $659 million in cryptocurrency across multiple heists, according to a joint statement from the US, Japan, and South Korea. Notable incidents include a $235 million theft from Indian exchange WazirX, attributed to the Lazarus Group, which has stolen billions in previous attacks, including $625 million from Axie Infinity in 2022.

The largest 2024 theft was from Japan’s DMM Bitcoin, with $308 million taken, leading to the exchange's closure. These attacks often involve sophisticated social engineering and malware, like TraderTraitor and AppleJeus, with phishing tactics targeting crypto firms' employees.

The FBI has warned that hackers use fake job offers and business opportunities to gain access, along with impersonating trusted contacts through realistic social media information. The US, Japan, and South Korea are urging businesses to be vigilant.

OpenAI introduces virtual assistant feature 'Tasks'

ChatGPT is launching a new beta feature, Tasks, for Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers. This feature lets users schedule reminders and actions, transforming ChatGPT into a more capable digital assistant, similar to Google Assistant or Siri, but with advanced language abilities.

Users can specify what they need and when, whether it's a daily weather report, a reminder for passport expiration, or a bedtime joke. To use it, select “4o with scheduled tasks” in the model picker and type out your request. The system can also suggest tasks, though users must approve them first.

Tasks can be managed through chat threads or a new Tasks section in the web profile menu. Users will receive notifications upon task completion, with a limit of 10 active tasks running simultaneously.

MrBeast says he'll buy TikTok to save it from being banned

MrBeast is reportedly stepping in to save TikTok from a US ban, with several billionaires now discussing the idea of making it happen. As the January 19 deadline looms, lawmakers are pushing for a shutdown of the app unless its US operations are sold or shut down, due to concerns over national security.

TikTok’s popularity has raised alarms about user data potentially being accessed by the Chinese government, prompting President Biden to sign a bill in April 2024. While ByteDance hasn’t shown interest in selling, the pressure is mounting, and MrBeast's January 14 tweet sparked speculation about him buying the app.

If TikTok were US-owned, it might avoid the ban. However, ByteDance’s lawyer has stated that the app is not for sale, and any deal would likely be blocked by the Chinese government.

TECH SPECIAL
Meta is cutting 5% of its ‘lowest performers’

Meta is planning more layoffs, targeting about five percent of "low-performers," as CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined in a recent memo. He announced plans to expedite the process of managing out underperforming employees, increasing performance-based cuts this cycle.

The upcoming layoffs could lead to a 10 percent reduction in Meta's workforce, factoring in attrition. Bloomberg reports that the cuts will focus on employees with performance ratings, potentially affecting those who’ve been with the company long enough to receive one.

This follows a wave of layoffs since late 2022, which has already seen over 20,000 jobs cut. In addition, Meta laid off 60 technical program managers earlier this month. Zuckerberg claims a leaner workforce will boost productivity, though employees may feel differently.
